APP RESEARCH AND DESIGN
The pursuit of knowledge is a none stop journey. Yet, on the way of this journey, we get busy and it sometimes becomes hard to keep up with our goals for knowledge acquisition. In times like these, learning quick facts on a daily basis can spark our curiosity for certain topics and encourage us to go beyond the quick fact and make us want to learn more quick facts. This theory has lead to the hypothesis that people’s desire to learn new facts and information is affected by how and when they are provided with the information. I began working on the facts app by examining the hypothesis and conducting a diary study. Before that I did a quick research and ideation to finally come to this hypothesis. Below is a preview of the design process I followed as I worked on this project.
Research Process
As an assignment and a personal interest, I conducted a field research for my Design Research class. I have been long interested in a digital idea that I haven’t validated yet, and I saw this assignment as an excellent opportunity to get started on it. Among the many field research methods, I chose diary studies. My idea is an application that delivers knowledge to people in the form of quick facts and aims to create the habit of always wanting to learn something new every day.
The application idea is still a theory. Diary studies will allow me to test my theory with the people I will be designing for. The fact that diary studies extend to more than just one day made it perfect for my research. Below is a diagram of the process I followed throughout the research.
Diary Study Process
The diary study was conducted with candidates remotely. Diary questions were sent to participants as forms using the online forms tool Typeform. The research meant to investigate whether learning a quick fact through a mobile device every day can stimulate people’s curiosity to learn more about the fact and learn more facts. The diary form layout contained an image on the top, the quick fact and a short description followed by the diary questions as shown in the screens to the right.
